The Act of Making

My graduation project involved a series of experiments exploring the impact of an empty office building, the Technical Service Building in Eindhoven, on my sense of identity. Among these experiments was the creation of a sculpture, capturing a snapshot of my impression of the TD-Building.

This series documents the evolution from the initial concept to the final product—a solid concrete mass standing roughly 70 centimeters tall. The horizontal slabs within the sculpture mirror the TD-Building's horizontal wings. As one approaches the TD-Building, these slabs appear to gradually diverge sideways, a feature directly echoed in the sculpture. Moreover, the vertical oblique core of the sculpture, maintaining a delicate equilibrium, can be likened to the vertical routing cores found within the office building.

Originating from the eighties, the TD-Building stands as a monolithic concrete structure, mirroring the nature of the sculpture. Despite its appearance of resilience, the building reveals vulnerability through weathering and natural growth. Similarly, the sculpture's beauty lies in its intricate details. While the sculpture's design is relatively straightforward, it was the act of creating it that stimulated a shift in perspective, unveiling the hidden allure of both the sculpture and the TD-Building. This process illuminated the concealed beauty inherent in both entities.
